Background of the study
Hashtagbased neologisms have rapidly become an integral part of Nigerian digital communication on Twitter. These neologisms emerge as users repurpose hashtags to create new words and expressions that encapsulate cultural and political sentiments (Akinyele, 2023). This study investigates the formation and dissemination of hashtagbased neologisms, examining how they reflect and shape social identities and public discourse. Twitter’s concise format facilitates quick adoption and transformation of language, resulting in the proliferation of innovative expressions that challenge conventional linguistic boundaries (Ibrahim, 2024). The study explores the processes of word formation, semantic shifts, and the role of digital networks in propagating neologisms. By analyzing a range of hashtag movements, the research aims to document the lifecycle of these new lexical items and assess their impact on language evolution in the Nigerian digital landscape (Okafor, 2023).
Statement of the problem
While hashtagbased neologisms are increasingly visible in Nigerian Twitter discourse, there is limited systematic analysis of their formation and impact. Existing research often overlooks the intricate processes by which these neologisms emerge and evolve. This lack of comprehensive study prevents a full understanding of how digital communication fosters linguistic innovation. The study seeks to fill this gap by examining the mechanisms underlying hashtagbased neologisms and evaluating their broader implications for language change (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of hashtagbased neologisms, contributing to our understanding of digital lexical innovation in Nigeria. The findings will inform linguistic research and digital media strategies by revealing how new words emerge and spread online (Akinyele, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on Twitter and examines hashtagbased neologisms in Nigerian digital discourse. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline language use.
